Personal or Virtual Assistant?

Do you need a permanent person in the office to meet and greet clients? Or do you have enough work for a full time assistant 40 hours a week? If this is the case, then you may be better of hiring a Personal Assistant (PA) over a Virtual Assistant (VA). If you are the type of person that likes to be in control and oversee every little detail of your business and have trouble letting go, with a feeling that no one can possibly do the tasks that you do in the same way and to the same standard that you do then an assistant may not be for you at all.

However, that being said, when a VA is a good fit for you and your business, they help you by alleviating not only your workload, but your stress – taking a load off your mind. However, if this isn’t the case and you find yourself micro managing your VA then they may not be the right assistant for you. It is important that if you hire a VA on a more regular basis that they work well for you and your business.

So the pros of hiring a Virtual Assistant over a Personal Assistant in a nutshell are; that you only pay a VA for the time spent completing a task and genuinely working for your business, rather than how many hours they are in the office. You don’t pay a Virtual Assistant holiday or sick pay or employers National Insurance contributions, whereas you would pay a Personal Assistant for those things, as an employee. You hire a PA on a permanent basis so whether your business is busy or quiet, you pay them the same. Whereas with a VA you can use them on an ad hoc basis and utilise them during your busy periods, saving you money. With a Virtual Assistant you save office space and there is no need to purchase equipment for them as you would with a PA.

You may be best off with a Virtual Assistant if you just want support in a certain area, for example with social media or bookkeeping, rather than a whole assistant package. Or if your business is working on a big project and you could use an extra pair of hands for a week or two, then a Virtual Assistant may be more appropriate than a Personal Assistant. Virtual Assistants are becoming increasingly more popular as the business world is changing, businesses are always looking for ways to save money and outsourcing (to a VA!) is a great way to save businesses time and money.
